A Hair Prosthesis – Custom-Made Medical Wigs

A hair prosthesis (or cranial prosthesis) is a custom-made wig specifically designed for patients who have lost their hair due to medical conditions or treatments, such as, alopecia areata[1] ,alopecia totalis [2], trichotillomania [3], chemotherapy, or any other clinical disease or treatment resulting in hair loss.

  1. alopecia areata: autoimmune disease, that causes cells in your immune system surround and attack your hair follicles (which is responsible for growing hair), causing hair loss. Hair usually falls out in small patches on the scalp
  2. alopecia totalis: It is a rare autoimmune disease characterised by the complete loss of hair on the scalp. It is considered an advanced form of the hair-loss condition alopecia areata.
  3. Trichotillomania: a condition that causes people a compulsive urge to repeatedly pull out their own hair, damaging hair follicles.

Difference Between Cranial Hair Prosthesis & Regular Wigs

Cranial hair prosthesis have advanced due to technology and is different from a regular wigs. Cranial hair prosthesis is done in several steps that include the taking of the cranial perimeter shape to achieve a perfect fit. The mold is done at the base where the hair is attached. The base is made using a hypoallergenic fabric since people having chemotherapy are usually very sensitive to any material, and their scalp is prone to allergies. The same is done when attaching the hair to the base. The procedure used to apply the hair is focused on avoiding that the knotting touches the scalp.

Health Insurance Cover for Hair Prosthesis / Custom-made Wig in Ireland.

In the vast majority of situations in which a custom wig is necessary due to medical-related therapies such as chemotherapy treatment, your medical card will cover most, or all, of the costs involved. Health insurance usually covers this as well, however, the exact coverage will depend upon your individual policy. Make sure you contact your insurance provider to see what is covered and what is not. Financial coverage is usually not an issue for those with medical-related needs, however, should you experience a problem with your financial coverage, the Irish Cancer Society can help.
